Check State Income Tax Refund Status for 2009, 2010

April 13, 2010 by

Once you file your federal and state tax return, you must wait for it to be accepted and then processed. This can take some time depending on how you filed your return.

If you mailed your return then you must wait for your state to receive it and enter it into their system. The time allowed for this will vary from state to state. Some states are estimating up to a 30 day wait just to view the status of your return. If you e-filed then you should be able to access this information much sooner.

Most states offer a government website that will allow you to check the status of your state refund. You will have to have some information handy. Your social security number, exact amount of your refund, and depending on where you live maybe more. If your state does not allow you to check the status online then you will have to call them. So be prepared for a lengthy wait and if it has not been processed yet they will not even be able to give you any information on your return.

We suggest e-filing your return through an online tax preparation service such as TurboTax Online. A service such as this can allow you immediate access through their website to your state tax return status. They will even send you an email as soon as your state tax refund is accepted along with an anticipated date of payment. They will also alert you of any errors with your return to allow you to fix them immediately.
